2017 - Low-Carbon Energy and Development Strategies
Engineering for Development "School on Energy"
9–28 July 2017
University of Cape Town, South Africa
The goal of the Engineering for Development (E4D) programme is to promote the development of products or methods which are directly relevant for improving the livelihoods of poor people in developing countries. The programme is funded through the external page Sawiris Foundation for Social Development since 2008.
The correlation between the consumption of modern forms of energy and long-term economic growth is well-documented, as well as the historic correlation between growth and adverse environmental impacts such as climate change. National policymakers seeking greener growth trajectories are therefore often interested in developing low-carbon energy and development strategies (LCEDS) that decouple energy use from greenhouse gas emissions. In this E4D School on Energy, students developed LCEDS which could support national policy decisions.
The course covered four subthemes related to energy and development:
- Energy systems, low-carbon energy technologies and public policy
- Fossil fuel subsidies and their reform
- Electricity access technologies and policies
- Development benefits and safeguarding of LCEDS
The E4D School on Energy took place from 9–28 July 2017 at University of Cape Town (UCT) in South Africa. It was composed of 24 graduate students coming from 17 different countries. They were joined by faculty members and external experts from fields of expertise related to the winter school topic. The course integrated lectures, group work, case studies and excursions and also included social and cultural activities.
