Exploring tandem teaching at Ashesi University

In January 2020, ETH4D visited Ashesi University on the outskirts of Ghana’s capital, Accra, and assisted in lectures in Digital Control Systems and Digital Systems Design. The two lectures were taught in tandem with faculty from external pageAshesi University and Dr. Andrea Carron from ETH. Students from Ashesi University impressed us with their high level of engagement during these lectures.

Valuable lessons were learnt in terms of structuring such lectures. Whilst the change in tone of voice and pace kept concentration levels high, students stressed the importance of not changing between lecturers too often and ensuring that there is only one lecturer per subtopic.

The visit helped to build the relationship between the two institutions to strengthen future collaborations.

KNUST/ETH-Sustainability Summer School: Rethinking Waste – Sustainable Solid Waste Management

A team from ETH4D and ETH-Sustainability visited the external pageKwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in February 2020 to collaboratively plan and design the summer school that will be held from 11 June to 6 July 2020.

As part of the visit, various potential excursion sites relevant to the topic of solid waste management were evaluated. Amongst others, the team visited Kumasi’s main landfill site and wastewater treatment plant - a valuable experience for the organisational team to better understand the context of the challenges faced in the region.

Personal interactions between the organisational teams of ETH and KNUST allowed substantial progress of the event planning.
