This Spring semester, ETH4D is offering four courses where students can gain insights topics relevant for global sustainable development and participate actively to contribute to sustainable development through their studies, research and as members of society.

One of ETH4D’s key activities is to educate future leaders of sustainable development, in Switzerland and Sub-Saharan Africa, by training a new generation of engineers and natural scientists able to develop, implement and scale world-​changing innovations with a global perspective. At ETH Zurich, we move towards this goal by offering the following courses:

851-0647-00L ETH Model United Nations (MUN)

Dr. Leonie Hensgen, Prof. Isabel Günther and Dr. Adina Rom

In this course, students will deepen their knowledge about the United Nations (UN), its opportunities and challenges, strengthen their negotiation and public speaking skills and get the chance to participate at a Model United Nations (MUN).

Open to all Bachelor, Master and doctoral students at ETH Zurich.
Registration open until 6 March 2020. Places are limited to 25.

The ETH Sustainability Summer School 2020 "Rethinking Waste" offers a unique learning experience: theoretical and practical knowledge gained via scientific presentations, workshops and group work. 20 students from ETH Zürich and 40 students from KNUST, all from diverse academic backgrounds and cultures, will participate in an intensive three-week learning experience, which will enable them to get first-hand experiences of global challenges and provide them an opportunity to work in interdisciplinary and cross-cultural settings towards a common goal. All of this will happen in inland Ghana in Kumasi, on and off campus of KNUST.

Open to all Bachelor, Master and doctoral students at ETH Zurich.
Registration open from 14 February to 16 March 2020. Places are limited to 20.

701-0900-00L The UN Sustainable Development Goals in Context

Prof. Bernhard Wehrli and Dr. Omar Kassab

The United Nations Agenda 2030 and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide an opportunity for the international community to shape the course of sustainable development. With their range of expertise, universities can develop the science to help achieving the SDGs. The lectures center on sustainability challenges and provide context from academics and societal actors.

851-0624-00L ETH4D PhD Seminar: Research for Development

Prof. Isabel Günther, Dr. Adina Rom and Dr. Jan Dirk Wegner

Summary: Doctoral candidates from all ETH departments, whose research is related to development issues, are invited to give a presentation about their on-going work and discuss their doctoral project with an interdisciplinary group of Researchers, so as to receive critical feedback on their project and to respond to questions within a wider development context.

Open to doctoral candidates from all ETH departments, whose research is related to development issues.
Registration open until 1 March 2020. Places are limited to 15.
