Applications Open: Summer School 2021 "Rethinking Waste"

In collaboration with Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology (KNUST) in Ghana, we will hold a summer school on sustainable solid waste management in September 2021. The ETH Sustainability Summer School "Rethinking Waste" offers a unique learning experience: theoretical and practical knowledge gained via scientific presentations, workshops and group work. Applications for tutors and participants are now open.

The ETH Sustainability Summer School will combine input by lecturers from KNUST and ETH Zurich with insights from local experts, NGOs and workers in waste management. A diverse programme with workshops & group work based on design thinking as well as several excursions will set students on the course of finding their favourite problem in solid waste management and thinking of ideas together with local teammates in-person, and international teammates virtually.

Due to the evolving COVID-​19 situation around the world and in line with ETH Zurich’s official advisories regarding safety, the summer school will take a hybrid format and will be held in parallel at ETH Zurich and KNUST campuses.

Apply as Tutor

We are looking for a team of 5 tutors to assist students of the summer school at ETH Zurich. Each tutor oversees the fast-paced process of one student team over the course of two weeks, from the development of ideas to the presentation of results. The tutor role is key to the success of each team and of the whole programme.

When: Please reserve time between 30 August and 19 September2021. Tutor training will take place from 30 August - 2 September. The summer school will take place from 4 - 17 Septemer, 2021.

Where: ETH Zurich

Who: You are a doctoral or Master’s degree student at ETH Zurich, self-confident, communicative and fluent in English (preferably also in German), and you will be staying at ETH Zurich for more than the current semester. In addition, you have an interest in interdisciplinary projects and teamwork, experience in the moderation of groups, an interest in project management.

Your tasks: You will assist a group of 4 students in developing ideas and solutions via various methods and techniques, promote the group process through targeted intervention and oversee time management, participate actively in supervisory meetings and in the evaluation of the Summer School. Apply as Participant

Together with 20 students from ETH Zurich and 20 students from KNUST, all of diverse academic backgrounds and cultures, you will be able to benefit from an intensive two-​week learning experience submerging you into the topic of waste and develop your ideas in ten interdisciplinary teams.

Who: The ETH Sustainability Summer School 2021 is open to 20 Bachelor, Master and PhD students from ETH Zurich from all diciplines. Candidates will be evaluated on their academic record, previous work experience, as well as their dedication to sustainability topics and interdisciplinary work. Prerequisites are excellent English skills in speaking and writing.

Credit Points: ETH Zurich accredits successful completion of the course with 3 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) points for participants. Acknowledgment of the points in your study programs at other institutions is your own responsibility. We expect you to attend for the entire course period.

Application: Applicants are required to fill in the external pageonline form and upload a one-page CV. We will select students based on their motivation, while ensuring a maximum balance in terms of gender, study level, experience, etc.
