Statistics and Machine Learning: ETH strengthens links with African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS)

Peter Bühlmann, Professor of Mathematics from D-MATH at ETH Zurich, gave a talk for the African Master’s in Machine Intelligence (AMMI) at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) last week.

AIMS is a Pan-African network of centres of excellence for post-graduate training, research, and public engagement in mathematical sciences. In 2018, external pageAMMI was launched at AIMS with the aim to bring the best of AI education in Africa and contribute to building an ecosystem of AI practitioners committed to making a positive impact. Dr. Moustapha Cisse is the director of AMMI and on the advisory board of ETH4D.

Prof. Bühlmann provided an overview of his work in Statistics and Machine Learning and discussed the potential and limits of machine learning techniques for causal inference with around 15 participating students. His presentation stimulated engaging and lively discussions with the students and paved the way for future collaborations and exchanges.

Moving forward, ETH Zurich and AMMI/AIMS aim to strengthen the on-going collaboration further, through lectures, teaching and research stays, research collaborations as well as mentorship and hosting students for their MA thesis.
