ETH doctoral students can now apply for the new Honours Programme in Sustainable Transitions, offered by five European universities, KNUST in Ghana and Strathmore University in Kenya.

IDEA League Honours Programme for Selected Doctoral Students from Europe and Africa

ETH Zurich has teamed-up with four European universities of the external pageIDEA League, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana, Strathmore University in Kenya and the NGO Green Growth Africa to offer a new honours programme for doctoral students focused on sustainable transitions. At the heart of the programme are two trips to in-person Sustainable Innovation Schools on "Energy Modeling" and "Life Cycle Assessment" in Nairobi in November 2023 and on "Governing the Just Transition" in Delft in May 2024.

AMBITION is a EU/Movetia-funded project that aims to support the education of a future generation of qualified young professionals trained across Europe and Africa and equipped with the tools to promote global sustainable development. This objective is pursued through a Joint Honours Programme for talented doctoral students who wish to become ambassadors for sustainable transition.

Three in-person Sustainable Innovation Schools

2 weeks in Nairobi, Kenya (Nov 2023)
School 1 - “Integrated energy and cross-sectorial modelling for the sustainable transition”
School 2 -  “Life cycle sustainability assessment - a methodology to support the industrial sector to measure its contribution to the SDGs”

1 week in Delft, The Netherlands (May 2024)
School 3 – “Governing the just transition”

Online Web Series: Complementary Skills

The Online Web Series will focus on ethical, social and political dimensions of the STEM disciplines. These short courses (2 hour each) deal with such complementary skills as project proposal writing, policy brief preparation, impact assessment of research and will enable young Ambassadors to reflect on, discuss and explain the societal implications of their research. The courses are planned for 2023/2024.

Delivering a game-based learning session

The participants in AMBITION will act as ambassadors for sustainable transition by co-creating a gamebased lesson plan on global development. They will share their knowledge during a learning session with undergraduate students and/or students from local high schools. The game-based learning session is planned for 2024/2025.

Successful completion of the programme and the award of certificate as an Ambassador for Sustainable Transition will require:

  • In-person attendance of at least two out of the three Sustainable Innovation Schools
  • Completion of at least four modules of the online web series (each module lasts 2 hours)
  • Serve as Ambassadors for sustainable transition by co-creating and teaching a game-based learning session for undergraduate/ high school students
  • Funded trips to Sustainable Innovation Schools in Nairobi, Kenya, (2 weeks) and Delft, The Netherlands, (1 week)
  • In-person and online training by researchers from seven leading European and African universities
  • Certificate of Participation issued by the seven partner universities
  • Being part of an international network of Ambassadors for Sustainable Transition
  • Serving as mentors to youth through the promotion of sustainable transition
  • Presenting the findings of their research to relevant stakeholders
  • The host universities will issue certificates of attendance for the Sustainable Innovation Schools documenting the workload in hours. In accordance with your doctoral regulations and in consultation with your supervisor, these hours may be translated into credit points

To be eligible for admission, applicants are required to

  • be enrolled as doctoral students with at least 2 years until graduation at the the partner Universities (Polimi, Chalmers, ETH Zurich, KNUST, RWTH Aachen, Strathmore University, TU Delft)
  • demonstrate within their CV and motivation letter
  1.     interest and commitment to sustainable development and the SDGs
  2.     interest in multidisciplinary and cross-disciplinary education and research
  3.     commitment to serve as ambassadors for sustainable development in high schools/universities
  • understand English effectively and communicate clearly in spoken and written English
  • commit to participating in the programme for its full duration (between November 2023 and July 2025)
