28 May, 5-7 pm

Collegium Helveticum, Schmelzbergstrasse 25, 8092 Zurich

The Collegium Helveticum and ETH4D cordially invite you to the keynote speech "Electricity and Service Provision in Informal Settlements" and the opening reception of the exhibition "Urban Lighting Realities", which take place as part of the symposium "Inclusive Cities" at the Collegium Helveticum.

Keynote: Electricity and Service Provision in Informal Settlements (5-6pm, Meridian Hall)

This keynote on infrastructure challenges and solutions in informal settlements is given by three women who have worked intensively to address infrastructure deprivation in the informal settlements where they live in Cape Town, South Africa. Thabisa Mfubesi, Xolelwa Maha, and Yamkela Rongwana will provide a rarely heard perspective on the kinds of infrastructure problems that affect their daily lives, the various strategies they have tried and organizations they have worked with to address those problems, and a public lighting project they did in collaboration with ETH Zurich researchers to address issues of nighttime access to public space.

Exhibition: Urban Lighting Realities, Guided Tour and Reception (6-7pm, The Laboratory)

What is the experience of public space lighting at night in informal settlements? The Sustainable Development Goals (Goal 11) prioritize making urban public spaces “inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable,” but without sufficient and effective public lighting, these ideals are hard to achieve.

This exhibition explores different urban lighting realities for residents of four informal settlements in Cape Town, Kampala, and Sarajevo. We invite you to come experience and engage with these different actual and virtual environments in a 4D Digital Twin from May 28-29, 2024, connecting quantitative data with artistic visualisation techniques in comparative circular projections.

This exhibition is curated by Yael Borofsky (Collegium Helveticum) and Michael Walczak (ETH Zurich, Prof. Klumpner Chair of Architecture and Urban Design) with contributions by Federico Caprotti (University of Exeter) and Spotlight Kampala.

The exhibition is open to the public on May 28: 11:00–20:00 & May 29: 9:00–20:00
